The six vessels of the Vanguard-class form the seaborne CASD element of the United Kingdom's (and by extension, that of the wider Commonwealth) nuclear "dyad" deterrence system, alongside the nuclear equipped Typhoon fighters and Lancer bombers of the Royal Air Force.

The Vanguard-class entered service in the late 1990s as a replacement for the preceding Resolution-class, with the newer and larger boats also introducing the new Trident missile system. At least one submarine is on patrol in the North Atlantic at all times (a patrol lasts 8 weeks), another on immediate standby to sail, and the remaining four performing routine training and/or maintenance. Each boat has a total of 140 crew, and (like its predecessors) draws inspiration from US Navy SSBN doctrine in having two shared crews that alternate patrol/training deployments. All six vessels are based at HMNB Faslane in Scotland as part of the 10th Submarine Squadron, with Trident missiles stored and loaded onboard at nearby RNAD Coulport. As Trident is a US designed system, training missile launches and research are performed in co-operation with the US Navy at training ranges in the Eastern USA. All crew introductory training is performed at the Royal Navy Trident School (RNTS - formerly RNPS) at Faslane. The vessels will be replaced by the 6 new vessels of the Dreadnought-class, currently under construction and due to enter service in the early 2030s.

These vessels each carry 16 UGM-133 Trident II ICBMs (each of which can carry 8 of the Mk 4A MIRV equipped, British designed/built "Holbrook" nuclear warheads). In addition, up to 16 Spearfish torpedoes are carried as a last resort self-defence weapon.

The Solent-class are the next generation of RN SSKs, replacing the ageing Upholder-class vessels as the backbone of the shallow water conventionally powered submarine force. 36 vessels will be procured over an 15 year period to replace the existing Upholder-class vessels like-for-like. The last vessel is due to enter service in 2037. As of August 2024, only 3 vessels have entered service although a further 10 vessels are under construction at Cammell Laird in Birkenhead and Scotts in Greenock.

The vessels will serve in the SSK squadrons of the Royal Navy in Britain (HMNB Faslane, HMNB Devonport, HMNB Chatham, and HMNB Portsmouth), Canada (one Canadian manned squadron at HMNB Halifax and another at HMNB Esquimalt), Australia (one Australian manned squadron at HMNB Sydney and another at HMNB Perth), Malta (as part of the Mediterranean Fleet), and Hong Kong (as part of the Pacific Fleet).

The vessel is designed from BMTs VIDAR 36 concept vessel and is designed for a wide variety of adaptable future missions. Partly owing to the "X" arrangement of the stern planes, the submarine is capable of operating in as little as 17 metres of water, allowing it to come much closer to shore than most contemporary submarines.

The class carry the Royal Navy standard Spearfish torpedo and UGM-84 Harpoon (being replaced by UGM-158C LRASM) for anti-submarine and anti-surface roles. Royal Navy standard Mk 67 SLMM and Stonefish mines can also be deployed. The class is compatible with a standard Royal Navy pattern dry dock shelter (DDS).

(Massive credit to Yurchenko/AlexandrShpak for the base drawing which I modified)

The Type 24 (or Furious-class) corvette (also interchangeably refereed to as a sloop or light frigate depending on usage/location) serves as the primary second-rate light general purpose frigate/corvette of the Royal Navy. 34 vessels were built from 1998 to 2015 and replaced the early Samson-class (VT Mk6) frigates that themselves replaced the Tribal and Blackwood-class vessels. They are based upon the Nakhoda Ragam-class corvettes built for the Malayan Navy.

The vessels are based across the Commonwealth with two squadrons based in Britain (HMNB Chatham and HMNB Devonport), one Anglo-Australian crewed squadron in Australia (HMNB Sydney), one Anglo-Maltese crewed squadron in Malta (HMNB Malta), one British crewed squadron in Hong Kong (HMNB Stonecutters Island), and one Anglo-Canadian crewed squadron in Canada (HMNB Halifax). Type 24 corvettes are often used for training/work-up and familiarisation roles in coastal waters as well as performing operational patrols with both OPVs and full size ASW frigates in support of countering unwanted maritime activity ranging from smuggling (such as off the Australian north coast) to detecting Russian submarine incursions in the Irish Sea. In addition the vessels also function in a similar way to the Floreal-class of the French Navy, being used for colonial patrol and guardship roles alongside resident River and Armidale-class patrol boats (usually one or two Australian based vessels are patrolling the islands of the South Pacific whilst seeing British or Canadian crewed vessel of the class in the Caribbean is the norm).

Each vessel is well armed for its size, equipped with 8 UGM-84 Harpoon launchers located amidships for anti-shipping roles and 4 Sting Ray light ASW torpedoes. In line with post-Falklands British naval doctrine, air defence is a high priority with each vessel having a Phalanx CIWS located at the stern and carrying 16 Sea Ceptor (replacing Sea Wolf) point defence missiles in a VLS located just forward of the bridge (this VLS can also launch SPEAR 3 missiles for limited land attack roles). A BAE 57mm automatic cannon (a British built design based upon, but not designed upon, the Swedish Bofers 57mm cannon) is also fitted primarily for surface combat.

Although a rear helicopter landing deck is present, no hangar facilities are included. The rear helicopter deck can be reconfigured to carry containers, mission pods, or additional sea boats if needed.
