1940: The Rio Grande Class Cruisers enter their first major refit:



The tripod masts were eliminated and replaced with tower structures mounting new gun directors for the main and secondary battery. New 25mm/70 anti-aircraft guns replaced the 3"/50s. Newer, more efficient motors could push her throught the water at almost 30 knots.

Her main battery was considered sufficient to take on the German Panzerschiffes, but her armor could not resist their 11.1" main guns. As a result, and following the increase in the Navy's endstrength in the Defense Act of 1940, another class of heavy cruiser would be designed to augment them.

Whilst I am a fan of the actual design the shading just looks plane weird both the sheer and funnels. I also would probably say that the railings could do with being darker rather than lighter than the superstructure.

I'm with Blackbuck and Thiel in regard to shading. But generally: great work.

Oh it's definitely quality work, it always is.
Speaking of shading, the shading on the bow seems rather stark compared to the rest of the drawing.

Very impressive, and good-looking on top of that!

I got tired of the old light gray and tried a different, darker shade this time, but still used my standard practice of RGB +30 for sun exposed areas on structures, RGB -30 for structure shadows and the hull color, and RGB -60 for hull shadows. If I use +20 or -20 there isn't enough contrast to see the differences in the shades. The base color is R116 G125 B124.

The gradient tool was used for curved surfaces on the director bases, barbettes, conning tower and the curved portion of the funnels. Gradient looks odd on canted surfaces, so I probably won't use it on anything except upright objects.

The last pre-war aircraft purchase comes in 1941, when 9th Bomber Squadron trades in its Martin B-10s for North American B-25Cs:



Built for medium to high altitude bombing, the Texas B-4 variant was also adapted to carry torpedos to strike naval targets from on-shore bases. Several torpedo types could be carried, from smaller short range weapons in the bomb bay to larger long range weapons slung under the bomb bay (the doors had to remain partially open for this practice, reducing range and speed.)

It was better suited for both missions than the older B-10s.

Examples shown are from C and A Flight, 9th Bomber Squadron. The 'tag number', a combination of the last two digits of the purchase year and the last two digits of the serial number, are visible on the rudder.
