I get cross to these images of the USS Benson class destroyers in italian service:

Now as they mostly present the ship in some sort of trials form of outfit, I couldn't help notice the odd looking square shaped gun in the Y position? Some sort of alternative 40mm radar controlled mount or 76mm??

The USS Benson was transferred to Italian Navy after ww2 and renamed Aviere with code no. D554.
After 1970 was no longer used for active service but for experience and tests: she kept the name but the code was changed into A5302.
It is clear that some of the equipments were prototypes. Among others were tested the 127/50 Oto, 76/62 rapid gun and Sea Sparrow.

Hello Gollevainen,
you're right - was an experimental 76mm compatto with FCS incorporated in the mount.
