This gun mounting grew out of a design study to replace the [[5in_38 Mark 12]] and was originally planned to be placed on the Montana class Battleships. instead, they made their first service debut on the Midway class aircraft carriers and the gunnery training ship USS Mississippi in 1945. They also saw use in Japanese service from 1960 onwards. Some of the japanese mountings were originally placed on the Midway class, where they were removed as weight compensation for updates.
