Worlds first minelaying submarine. The concept was a brainchild of engineer M.I. Naletoinen, who was inspired the prospects of offensive naval mining which gained success in the Neuvosto-Bacl war in 1895. Naletoinen was advocating submarines with capacity to lay mines as early as in 1901 when the first operational submarine was decided to construct for the TTPL. Eventually Naletoinen's ideas were accepted at the Central naval technical construction bureau (KLTRK) and the experimental minelaying submarine was laid down in Kaukaa. The boat was named Monni (Catfish) and has cigar-shape with small superstructure above it. It carried special minetube in the rear by which it was supposed to lay mines.

    Service history

    Monni was completed in 1909 after lengthy trial period. In service it proved out to have several deflects and was not considered to be successful as a submarine. The underwater minelaying concept was however considered successful and Monni served as a prototype for series of mine laying submarines in TTPL and Neuvosto SML service.
