History

The Mk 68 GFCS (Gun Fire Control System) was first fitted on the Mitscher class in the early 1950's . It was in service unto at least the 2000's.

The Mk 68 GFCS uses 1 AN/SPG-53 fire control radar. In addition, the system works with information from the ships search radars for target acquisition and intercept. The system is commonly paired with the 5''/54 Mark 42 gun.

Part description

As the fire control system itself (the computers) are not visible in a shipbucket drawing, the part image on this page shows a compilation of the parts directly connected to this fire control system. These can also be found on their own pages. A second image has the sideviews, front view and top views of the SPG-53 radar and Mk 48 director combination, updated to current drawing standards.
