The Skoric Daugrech, officially the Skoric Peoples Socialist State(S.P.S.S.), is a nation that spans much of the northern Ariethnian continent. As a federal state, it is comprised of 23 regions, each with their own local governments and representative assembly. These regions are divided under various districts and Okrass', each with varying degrees of autonomy depending on their development. These regions are all united under the authority of the central government within Suric, headed by a supreme leader and council of ministers. With an area of 6.942 million square kilometers, the Skoric Daugrech is also the fourth-largest country by total land area, and the fifth most populous. Its most populated city, Theamak, is also its largest financial center, located in the Theamak SAS. At the time of its independence, the Skoric Daugrech was the first true constitutionally socialist country.

The Skoric Daugrech was born out of the death of the Askorian Empire in the early 20'th century. The Empire, a union of 58 holy kingdoms, was the true first unified Skoric state. However it was plagued by acute food shortages, political violence and a general distrust of the ruling elite. This civil unrest would culminate into a civil war against Empire forces in early 1911 by the Socialists. The war proved itself to be one of the most bloodiest fights for independence in known history, having razed down most of the western cities into rubble, causing tens of millions of deaths. Despite the rabid fighting of Empire forces, they would eventually capitulate, with the execution of king Geld Sterafor marking the end of the war. The proclamation of a new Skoric State, this time socialist, would come a few months later. Socialist rule during the early period was characterized by various large projects aimed at alleviating the acute problems faced in the post-war period, many of which turned out to be successful. Others less so. The Supreme leader of the Skoric State, Loyman Ghauss helped oversee the rise of the Skoric State to join the other industrialized world powers.

In late 1940, the Skoric Daugrech would finish the reconstruction of the State Armed Forces, and launch a pre-emptive invasion of the Holy Republic. This would mark the start for the Pan-Ariethnian Conflict(PAC). The estimated military and civilian casualties are said to exceed 35 million. An end to the war would be found in 1947, albeit tied by an uneasy truce. A nuclear arms race would meanwhile enforce a cold-war period upon the Skoric Daugrech and the Holy Republic, creating a period of intense xenophobia and paranoia. The Skoric Daugrech in this period would support socialist rebels in various countries across the globe in an attempt to carve its own sphere of influence the world over. It would create its own bloc of nations, the Autonomous Nations(ATNAS), to compete against the Lilaborn-led bloc. When 1964 came, the Skoric Daugrech would inflame tensions by supporting Mer-Freula in its invasion of Merakistaq. This would later lead to an initially crippling blockade in 1970, dubbed 'The Great Oceanic Wall', whose comprehensive economic sanctions would last up until the early 2000's. The end of the blockade helped pave for the way for an increasingly liberal economy, with the Skoric Daugrech implementing shock therapy to stimulate the economy back into into productivity. Cooling relations helped pave for the way for increased free trade, allowing for unprecedented economic growth in the 21'st century.

Throughout its entire existence, the Skoric Daugrech played an instrumental role in the sciences. It has made significant contributions to the sciences, advancing military and commercial technology. As one of the founding members of the Consortium of Nations, the Skoric Daugrech possesses a permanent seat on the World Council. At its height, it had the world's second-largest economy, and bears the world's fourth-largest presently. The Skoric Daugrech continues to compete economically, technologically, militarily, and ideologically with its peers.

History

Revolutionary Foundation (1898-1901)

The roots for the modern revolution are hard to trace, however, most historians agree that the 1778 grain riots are what started it all. Widespread famine plagued must of the western Empire, a cause being the incompetence of Imperial governors, whose mismanagements and corruption led to the starving of millions. Economic isolation on the world stage also meant that living conditions continued to deteriorate inside of the empire. While many grass-roots activists attempted to reason with Imperial authorities, political deadlock prevented any and all change. The cause for this resistance for change came primarily from the nobility, who feared a stronger working class would have disastrous effects on their stranglehold over the country. Empire Geld Sterafor held this sentiment too, and thus feared the unraveling of the first Skoric State.

After the grain riots in 1778 came the demonstrations. In 1901 the rural cities of Ochertsborg and Leddsborg had mass civil demonstrations against the wheat-cut enforced on farms by the Imperial government. Empire soldiers would brutally murder thousands in an attempt to quash dissent, but predictably caused a fire of riots to engulf every city within the Empire. The voice of the people was loud and clear; change, they wanted change. And if blood must be spilled for it… then, so it shall be done.

War of Honor(1902-1911)

Loyman Ghauss was many things, a farmer, a family man, and a former veteran of the fifty years’ war. He tended a farm within the current Obnian SAS, and though the what-cut troubled him, he was content to live his life in spite of it all. However the death of his own daughter and son due to a drunk Empire officer motivated him to pursue politics, to enact change through civil means if necessary. However violence was not out of the question. Rather unexpectedly, he would somehow become the figurehead of the Skoric socialist movement. He was not charismatic nor had booming speeches, but the people saw him as a genuine, soft-spoken pragmatic man with a vision that resonated with the people.

Socialist militias would pop through much of the country in early 1902, although the country was all but crumbling by mid-1902. It was a full-blown civil war. The mobilizing of the Royal Guard Corupus to fight and crush demonstrations and rebellions alike motivated much of the population to go to war against the Imperial Government. The heads of nobles rolled by the hundred, then thousands. They were attacked and killed where they stood, collaborators were shot and thrown over bridges. The rivers turned red. By 1911, much of the Empire had collapsed into small holdouts of Empire soldiers and collaborators fighting against a horde of angry farmers, city workers, and veteran soldiers. Much of the Empire's west was razed to the ground by the fighting, cities turned to rubble and farmland destroyed by the shelling and intentional crop-scorching.

When 1911 came, 35 million were dead. Millions more were displaced, having run to the Socialist strongholds of Theamak and Skogvarg, the industrial heartland of the Empire. There was no one left, no nobles within the country to deny the people their right to rule by a different hand. By a different man. Emperor Geld Sterafor would be executed by hanging in the city of Geldaborg in December 1911—ironically, marking the end of the civil war. The Empire was fractured, and the neighboring nations of Zoble and Lilabor found no resistance when they took the land that they pleased at the outer reaches of the Empire, much to the disdain of the Skorics.

Post-War Reconstruction and Social Reforms

When January 1912 came, there was a new country on the map, with a strange ideology. The first Socialist nation in the world, the Skoric Peoples Socialist State. At its head, was Loyman Ghauss, alongside a council of ministers made up of intellectuals, most of them former political prisoners of the Emperor. Their loyalty was unquestionable, their allegiance is to their homeland, foremost—and Loyman embodied the homeland more so than most, in his words and in his actions.

The end of the civil war saw great strife among the people. Food shortages were everywhere, due to the razing of the west into a barren wasteland devoid of human life. Despite the critical state of the new fledgling socialist republic, it persisted. The Skoric State would fund important reconstruction efforts, rebuilding the destroyed western cities, while repopulating and re-tilling the farmland to alleviate the chronic issue of overpopulation. The royal treasury proved vital in funding this all, and Skoric ministers managed to convince banks overseas to access the accounts of the former Imperial Skoric State.

By 1920 the Skoric State had essentially recovered from the worst of the war. The west had been completely rebuilt, and the broken lands now farmed for bountiful harvests. Mechanization of farming through imported equipment had a big impact on the Skoric agricultural industry. Manufacturing would also be hugely expanded, the industrial capacity dwarfing that of the former Imperial Skoric State. In so far as reforms are concerned, the Skoric State would take rather progressive actions—such as enforcing equality and repealing borderline apartheid policies. Women would have the right to vote, the right to own and house, and a right to education just as much as any man in any city within the State. This level of freedom would attract many intellectuals and scholars from around the globe, especially scientists, trying to avoid persecution within the Imperial states.

It wasn’t long until it joined the ranks of the other industrialized nations of the world, this time as a rising power. This incredible recovery, this economic miracle so to say, helped embolden socialist groups across the globe. The Skoric Daugrech was thus considered a shining beacon of socialism to the world over. But to the Imperial states, it merely convinced them that the Skoric Daugrech was an existential threat. A godless state which rejected the commonly-held belief that all life was sculpted by the hands of the almighty, so to say. This angered the Holy Republic. More so than the fact they failed to exterminate the Skoric nomads whom they drove from their former lands.

Political Landscape and Suppression of Opposition

There is a famous saying that goes “A fascist is a leftist's second-worst enemy, right behind a leftist's true worst enemy, which is a slightly-different leftist who holds 94% of the same political views.” and never had it been truer in late 1920. Although the Imperial supporters had basically been wiped off the face of the country, or been forced out through political violence, a new threat would emerge. All socialists draw their ideology from a small excerpt written by Anhiet Hages, the father of Socialism. The Socialist ideology which Ghauss spear-headed was an interpretation of this excerpt, however they would soon find political fracturing from others who interpreted it differently. Essentially disagreement over what ‘Skoric socialism’ actually was, and though debates were intense, they were civil. No one wanted another war, not after such bloodshed. However no one could tell for how long this debate would remain ‘civil’ before blood was spilled again. Ghauss was especially worried of this.

This source of anxiety came primarily from groups deep within the government, the so-called ‘True-Socialites’. They had a different idea of how to run the nation, of what policies to implement. They desired to construct a nation in strict accordance with Anhiet’s vision of a modern Skoric State. But the reality is that often countries must make compromises in their ideology so as to reach the most efficient and stable form of governance. Obviously, the True-Socialites didn’t believe in this. However the potential threat of the True-Socialities, despite being a minority, was seen by Ghauss. Alongside the expelling of thousands of suspected and confirmed True-Socialities, the Skoric State would put all media outlets under the control of the state. Allowing for dissenting voices to be systematically silenced and propaganda disseminated to reinforce the belief in the Skoric State.

It didn’t take long until the Skoric state became a surveillance state, with a staggeringly vast network of spies throughout the nation to survey for dissent. To maintain ideological purity, the Skoric education system also made an effort to focus on the study of Socialism itself. This Skoric State attempted to get across that it was a fact that socialism was the optimal way to govern a nation. And that all other ways are inefficient, and of course this was all done in the name of continued stability.

Despite the ruthless crushing of political freedoms, and all the surveillance, the populace was overall rather complacent with it all. For the most part, the quality of life had risen by several times. Many could now buy cars, live in decent houses, and eat good food. They had suffered so much in the past century, and virtually almost all saw no issue in the fact that only the Skoric Socialist Party ruled supreme over the land.

The Pan-Ariethnian War and Aftermath

The outbreak of the Pan-Ariethnian War in 1940 marked a turning point in the history of the Skoric Daugrech. Skoric spies had relayed information that the Holy Republic of Lilaborn was mobilizing for a potential invasion, alongside other states that bordered the Skoric Daugrech. Thus, The Skoric Daugrech attempted a pre-emptive invasion of the Holy Republic of Lilaborn. It was considered the 'first shot' of the Pan-Ariethnian Conflict (PAC). The war involved a massive amount of military material and included mass mobilization on a never-before-seen scale. Skoric industry was almost entirely honed for the production of war material, to ensure maximum combat effectiveness.

The war saw the Skoric Daugrech engage in and also suffer intense aerial bombings and chemical warfare. The death toll was staggering, with entire cities reduced to dust. In the wake of the conflict, the Skoric Daugrech was ultimately beaten back, but not defeated. Much like its rival, it faced the herculean task of post-war reconstruction, considering that large segments of its infrastructure lay in rubble.

The uneasy stalemate reached in 1947 resulted in the Skoric Daugrech consolidating its territories captured in the east and the south. The Skoric Daugrech, although battered, remained intact, and continued to exert its influence throughout its bloc of Socialist nations (ATNAS).

International Tensions and Proxy Wars

In the years following the Pan-Ariethnian War, the Skoric Daugrech and its allies faced complex international tensions, primarily with the Holy Republic of Lilaborn and the rising Deysian Federation. The Skoric Daugrech's highly centralized military alliance, known as The Autonomous Nations(or ATNAS), served as a bulwark against regional and international adversaries. The alliance played an important role in safeguarding the Skoric Daugrech's interests and bolstering its position on the world stage.

The Skoric Daugrech was active in supporting various proxy wars, providing military and logistical aid to socialist rebel groups in central Deysia and Noshkovia, often against the influence of the Holy Republic of Lilaborn, These proxy wars further destabilized the region and drew the Skoric Daugrech deeper into the global power struggle.

In 1966, the Skoric Daugrech shocked the world by becoming the first nation to employ Silvum gas, a novel chemical weapon, during the short but intense Second Ruvian-Skoric War. The use of this weapon drew international condemnation, leading to calls for disarmament and a renewed focus on chemical weapons regulations. It eventually led to a chemical weapons ban and the near-total destruction of chemical weapons stocks around the globe.

The Deysian Federation and the HRL's blockade in the early 1970s posed a significant challenge to the Skoric Daugrech's economic and military growth. It forced the nation to explore alternative sources for rare-earth metals and critical chemicals essential for its industries. As a result, the Skoric Daugrech was forced into a period of isolation from the global market, a period referred to as the "Great Isolation."

During this time, the Skoric Daugrech leveraged its influence over ATNAS, a group of socialist nations that provided vital trade partners and economic support. The Muwaic PSR became the Skoric Daugrech's primary trading partner, and the economic relationship between the two nations deepened significantly during this period. This led the Skoric Daugrech to get into unequal trade treaties.

The Skoric Daugrech's economic resilience and adaptive policies helped it to overcome the challenges of the blockade. While import restrictions and trade embargoes persisted, the Skoric Daugrech continued to develop its industrial base, diversifying its economy and achieving notable self-sufficiency. It is one of few nations that could be said to have successfully committed autarky, however, this is disputed.

Military

The Skoric Peoples Socialist State maintained a professional army, ranking second in the GSI index in 2005 for defense capability. Spending a total of 7% of its GDP on defense(2015) the Skoric Military ranked second in military spending. The Skoric armed forces, formed shortly after the official proclamation of the Skoric Socialist State, maintains six main branches; Ground Forces, Air Forces, Naval Forces, Strategic Missile Forces, Air-defense forces, and Domestic Security Forces. The various branches of the armed forces, along with military policy, are headed by Skoric High Command. Much of the military bureaucracy occurs in a large military installation called 'Hesher' or Facility B2, which is located at a remote location in the Suraggard SAS.

The Skoric military has largely been a ground and air-focused force, its military largely prepared to repel any potential incursion from its eastern and southern flanks. The Skoric State Air Force aids in the extensive support of the ground forces via the operation of large radar installations, unmanned drones and other surveillance aircraft. The Skoric navy played a large role in the geopolitical importance of the Skoric Daugrech however its effect had largely diminished through gradual cuts in budget and the size of the fleet. The Skoric army has long adhered to the military tradition practiced within the Askorian Empire. Its military past, going back nearly two hundred years, permeates much of Skoric society, thinking and culture. In 2010, there existed some 3 million soldiers, 1.6 million of which served in the Skoric Army. These 1.6 million were divided into 160 divisions, 135 of which served as motorized infantry, with 25 serving as armored divisions. Some 400,000 meanwhile would serve in the Skoric Naval forces. The Skoric Air Force, which mainly existed as a means of air defense and air superiority fields a large fleet of air superiority fighters. Alongside this, it would also maintain a sizable fleet of nuclear-capable strategic bombers. The Skoric Missile Forces operated more than 1300 ICBMs, deployed across some estimated 20 bases, and 178 command centers. In the late stages of the Skoric Daugrech's existence, it would aid the Muwgawana PSR in crushing a revolt in its northeast province. This would mark the last overseas deployment of the Skoric Expeditionary Force.

For much of the Skoric Daugrech's existence, conscription would be continually in effect. Mandatory conscription would be relaxed in the 2000's, by which a pivot in policy led to the transformation of the Skoric army to a volunteer force.
