History

The RIM-161 Standard Missile-3 is an anti-ballistic missile surface to air missile developed for the US Navy. It is part of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defence System. The SM-3 uses the same motor and booster as the RIM-156 Standard Missile-2 ER Block IV with the addition of a third stage for exo-atmospheric intercept. Because of this the missile has a new body.

SM-3 can only be fired from an Strike length MK 41 VLS and is so far only used together with the AEGIS system.

The missile is operational from 2014 onwards and is in use by the US Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force.
