Development

This class were large series of gunboats intended to serve in Chinese rivers and colonial waters. Their draught was specially low for riverine operations. Initial 4 units had different configuration of two 120mm guns fitted in casemats aside the forecastle-break. Of the initial 4 units, only Hulun survived the Far eastern- Japanese war. 4 aditional units were laid down during the war with different armament configuration. The two 120mm guns were located in front and aft centerline and 76mm guns were fitted in casemats in corners of the forecastle.
