Development

These were the first destroyers in Far Eastern service. To distinct them from the earlier smaller torpedo boats, they were named (Эскадренные Торпедоносцы) - Eskadrennyye Torpedonostsy. The design was based on British Thornycroft 30-knotter. Initially two boats were ordered from UK (both wich were sunk during the Fa Eastern - Japanese war) and those were followed by series of 31 domestically build boats. 13 boats were lost in the war against Japan and by 1920 the remaining units were assigned into coastal patrtol duties. Their speed was reduced due wear and aging and they hardly made 25-26 knots anymore.
