AN/SPS-52
History
The AN/SPS-52 was an development by Hughes of the AN/SPS-39. The radar uses an planar antenna, which was first used for the SPS-52 but later fitted to SPS-39 installations as well. It received digital stabilisation instead of the analog stabilisation of the earlier types. Development started in 1963. Production ended in 1989 at that time the improved version of Mk 23 TAS enjoyed much the same performance as SPS-52 but with a much better data rate.
SPS-52B was an 60% wider version for more range, but was not particularly successful.
Many ships replaced their SPS-52 with the AN/SPS-48

Part description
The part has 3 versions on the image: the early antenna, the later planar array and the wider B model. The planar array models are fitted with the IFF 'bar' on top, as was common for these radars.
