AN/SPS-8
History
The AN/SPS-8 was an S-band air search and heightfinding radar. It was the main early post-war height-finder in the USN. The radar was first introduced in 1952. 3 models existed: SPS-8, SPS-8A and SPS-8B. SPS-8 and SPS-8A used the same antenna. SPS-8B, first tested in januari 1956 and put into survice in 1959, had a different antenna which resulted in a tighter beam. SPS-8B was developed into AN/SPS-30. It was planned to upgrade the SPS-8 and SPS-8A to SPS-8C / D with the installation of the antennas and other components of SPS-30 but these plans were never implemented.
